How water-transfer chroming works

18.04.2026·5 min read

Water-transfer (hydro) chroming is a way to give a part a chrome-like mirror surface without traditional electroplating. It works where classic chroming isn’t possible or where a lighter solution is wanted.

How the process goes

First the surface is prepared: cleaned, primed and sanded smooth. Then a special layer is applied that activates on the water’s surface and coats the part evenly.

Finally comes a protective lacquer. It gives a deep shine and protects the surface from wear. Without it, the result wouldn’t last.

What to watch for

The quality of the result depends on preparation. Every scratch or imperfection shows on a glossy surface, so it pays not to rush. Done well, hydro chrome lasts for years.
